Hello Family and Friends!
Sorry it has been a while for the next up-date, Germany was sooooo full on and did not have time or energy at all to do another while we were there.
Well the rest of our Germany visit rocked! We had the most amazing time with our friends. They showed us around the local breweries, villages and shops, castles and churches etc. We also visited two very famous dams that were part of the 'Dam Busters' operation in the world war two. Dave loves the story and history about it thanks to his Grandad, and took lots of photos to show him when we get back.
We had a very European breakfast every morning that consisted of meats, cheese and bread with tea or coffee. Took a couple of days to get used to eating that kind of thing for breaky - but grew to like it.
We had an awesome adventure for three days on the road. We headed right to the bottom of Germany to a very cool town called Fussen which was located right at the Alps - WOW! What an awesome location. We did stay in a rather interesting cheap hotel. Dead birds outside the window, an interesting kitchen in a wardrobe, carpet on the doors and a hole cut in the bathroom door so it could be pushed past the toilet in the tiny bathroom lol. I would not have stayed anywhere else though, was very funny. We visited a very famous fairytale castle called 'Neuschwanstein' - was AMAZING! Just wanted to play and explore in it all day long!
We crossed over to Austria for a while which was on the other side of the Alps from the German border. Was very beautiful and you could walk around the tiny cobbled stone streets all day - very scenic. Unfortunately no boarder control anymore so no Austrian stamps for our passports :(.
Next was Munich - a very large city where the Oktoberfest is held (saw Oktoberfest location). Saw many churches and walked for miles! An impressive city but not as nice as the quaint little villages and towns where there is a lot of typical German culture. In Munich we visited the 1972 Olympic Village where all the sports arenas etc were, and the accommodation where some sports players were taken hostage by terrorists - very sad story. We took the 7m/s lift, 285m up the Olympic tower and looked out across Munich - was very cool. We also briefly visited the BMW museum. Oh yeah and we took an extensive 'accidental' tour through the red light district! How the hell we got in there we do not know but it sure as hell took a long time to get out of it! lol. We had dinner at a very famous brewery restaurant in the city. They had wonderful traditional Germany music that made you want to cheer with your glasses in the air and shout 'HEEEY!!' followed by rocking your beer glasses side to side. We had wonderful traditional German food and one litre beers! Dave drank two very quickly and the waiter was very impressed! lol.
It was north to Bayreuth next. A very cool old town with lots of interesting history. We visited the most amazing theatre - real gold EVERYWHERE! We also visited a couple of palaces which were really cool and had beautiful gardens. It was here we stayed and picked up another friend of ours. We stayed at her very cute tiny studio flat and had a yummy meal that she had prepared for us. After dinner we went to a beer garden and had, yup you guessed it, BEER! in one litre jugs AGAIN! We also has a traditional German shot of spirits (which we can't remember the name of) that was really really strong - Dave did not mind it but was not my cup of tea.
We headed back to Warstein where we were to wind down our German experience - well so we thought. lol. We now had a traditional village (most villages have their own every year) 'Sultzenfest'. Man! A LOT OF DRINKING! Beer and Spirits! It is a bit of a story trying to explain what it is all about - so will tell you all about it when we get back.
We had a farewell BBQ with all our friends there to say good bye. Man do those Germans sure know how to cook! Yum Yum Yum! Was sad to say good bye after such a short time with them all and not having seen them for a long time, but there will always be another trip! :)
On the Saturday, we left for London. With all our non-stop travelling adventure in Germany, I'm not sure we had completely got over the jet lag - rather, dragging it on a bit i think. We arrived in London very tired as we started to unwind from a busy week. Sarah and Rob (Dave's sister and her partner) greeted us at the airport and showed us a few of the local sights in the morning - then we CRASHED! Big time! and slept the rest of the day away - along with having a fab nights sleep, so we really must have needed it!
Off to explore London tomorrow, and have a few more stories for you since we arrived, but I think this is long enough for now - will write again sooner this time as we have internet at Sarah and Rob's.
