Day 50 - Breakfast was on the balcony overlooking the Caldera and watching a couple of large cruise ships coming into port well below us. What a way to eat cornflakes. We walked (up & down steps) to the bus depot at the back of the village for a 20 minute ride back to explore the port village of Thira. A connecting bus took us to a beach resort of Kamari on the opposite side of the island. The beach is unusual in that it is made up of small black lava pebbles, so suitable footwear is a must. Plenty to offer the tourists here as well, so we arranged accommodation here for the next 2 days. On the bus again and back to Thira for a cable car ride down the cliffs to the port below. We then had 3 choices on how to get back to the bus at the top, walk the 488 steps, cable car or donkey ride. We chose the latter. These animals certainly earn their keep. Once on board the handler just lets them go and they climb the hill at their own pace. After 20 minutes we reach the top, not the most comfortable ride, but it sure beats walking. After a bus trip & dinner back at our village, it was a late end to the day.
