Day 49 - A late start today as checkout wasn't til 12 noon. The resort bus transferred us to the "New Port" to catch the "High Speed 5" catamaran to Santorini. This large ferry had two levels of car accommodation and seating for over 400 passengers and a cruising speed of over 40 knots. Our journey took around two and a half hours with stops at Los & Paros islands. Our taxi took us from Thira, the capital and main port of Santorini on a 30 minute drive to Oia, a small and busy village situated 300 feet high on the cliffs on the northern end of Santorini Island above the Caldera (the volcano crater that has sunken into the sea to form a huge natural boat harbour). Our home for the next two days was a cave house with panoramic views over the harbour and the surrounding islands. The village is home to over 70 churches and relies on the tourists to survive. The main streets are narrow and have plenty of steps. A walk down town & back becomes a good cardiac workout. There are plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants that offer good cheap dining with spectacular views. Oia offers tourists great sunset views and tourist boats bring passengers from other ports to Oia just for the sunsets but unfortunately those coming in by boat had to climb over 150 steps to reach a good spot to see the sunset. We were fortunate that our cavehouse was close to the best high vantage point to watch the sunset, however we had to share it with hundreds of other tourists, but it was worth it.
