Day 30 - At Salizburg and still can't believe the run of great weather. We booked a 4hour "Sound of Music" tour, picked up by the coach from our hotel, The Holiday Inn, and headed out to see most of the places in Salzburg where the filming took place. The entire film took 12 months to shoot and started back in 1964. Places included Leopoldskrom Palace beside the lake where, in the film, the boat capsized. We passed the Nonnberg Abbey where Maria (Julie Andrews) came from to become the von Trapp nanny. We left the city and headed for the mountains and popular lakes district. Two of the glacier lakes, Lake Fuschl (headquarters for the drink Red Bull) and Lake Wolfgang were also used in the film. Our lunch break on tour was in the tourist village of Mondsee. This village has a cathedral that was used in the film to shoot the wedding scene between Maria and Captain von Trapp. Interestingly the people of Salzburg didn't see The sound of Music as it was never translated from English as it was not possible to translate from English to Austrian and keep the story. The people of Austria know the story under a different movie. The Sound of Music is based on the true story of the Von Trapp family but as with all Hollywood movies it has been glorified. The real Von Trapp family left Austria before the Germans came and ended up living in America, where their families continue to live today. Lunch in one of the local cafes was a large serving of delicious locally made apple strudel and ice cream. The tour returned to Salzburg via the autobaun around 1.30pm. Our next stop was a visit to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. This was accessable in a steep cablecar ride up about 300 metres directly behind the city. Priests back in 1077 first built the fortress. Now only a tourist attraction, it has several great museums, galleries and exhibitions covering the history of the fortress. The tour of this very large attraction was made easier with hand held audio guides. We finished the day at an Italian restaurant and it was home to pack for the next train trip.
