My Trip
So up next was Surf Camp. This both Jules and I were really looking forward to.
We arrived in Crescent Head and immediately were fitted for wetsuits and boards, and taken down to this out of the way Beach.
I have never done anything like this, but they say if you can ski/board it comes with practice, and I can do both. Was really excited about this, the beach was spectacular, un-spoilt and deserted, apart from the surf school teachers.
You warm up, and then practice jumping up on your board whilst on the beach - not as easy as it sounds!
And then out to the sea...
This was so much fun, when the wave is a couple of meters behind you; you have to paddle like your life depends on it. Then the wave catches you, and your speed carries you. That's the easy part; from there you have to jump onto your board and balance.
I'll put it like this; I think my future career of being a pro surfer is under jeopardy! I got up for a few seconds a couple of times, but immediately fell. Jules was a natural and by the second day he was up loads. We both absolutely loved it.
Wiping out was even really fun, cos you go under and your board shoots up really high, have some wicked pictures that I'll upload when I have time.
The teachers were real dudes too, like out of the movies, everything was dude this, wipe out, nice!
We had a camp fire at night and a massive BBQ with a jenga tournament for the washing up.
We also had a visit from some local dolphins whilst on our boards, they are so amazing, gliding through the water, playing and jumping. That was such a surprise and highlight.
Although I didn't master it I really did give it a hell of a shot, and may try a private lesson sometime in the future.
Wicked fun DUDE!
