So I have finished my first week of real work at the camp; although I don't know if mine could be called real work. For the first week I was the camp photographer. When I was first told this would be my job I was happy and bummed all at the same time.I was happy because I would now have something with a purpose to do around camp, but sad that I would not be doing anything with the children which are why we are here.
The very first day I was shown what to do and even had an assistant which would have been great if we spoke the same language.Actually, I think if just half of the camp spoke the same language things would go smoother. We got it under control though I mean all I was doing was taking pictures of children on horses for about four hours out of the day, so after an hour or so we had a wordless system as to how we would pose the children, get them on and off the horse and even keep them in line while they waited for their friends.
I also had kitchen duty for about three hours a day serving children food.I would just like to take this moment now to apologize to all the lunch room monitors I might have given hell to in my youth. This is a job that can be fun if you make it fun, but sometimes the children can be a huge pain in the ass. They will throw food at each other, fight and get angry if they do not get their food right away.Granted the last one is almost like an adult in a restaurant, but you get the idea. Some of the children loved to help which meant less work for me.I also had the pleasure of serving the Barcelona Junior Basketball team dinner this week. These kids were pretty awesome, because I also had the pleasure of turning thirty-five this week. They were the only people who actually took time out and sang me Happy Birthday!I tried to keep my birthday low key, but because of The Facebook, some of their monitors found out and made it a point to have them sing to me.
The photography job actually got a lot easier and more enjoyable as the week went on.For some time of it, I was given free reign of the camp to just go into classrooms and different events throughout camp and photograph whatever was going on at any given moment.Children love to get their picture taken. There is a beautiful innocence about getting a picture of children playing or learning something new and them not realizing what it is you are doing. It never seemed to stop them though they just kept right on with whatever it was they were going, sometimes stopping to go grab their friends and flash a peace sign.
The week ended with a night out, as most weeks do, with a few of the other monitors.I wasn't really sure I wanted to go out due to the fact I was tired and didn't get a chance to eat anything because of working. We left about one A.M. to go to someone's house to drink and all I wanted was food so I was a little annoyed. However, Spaniards being the amazing people they are opened their kitchen and whatever was there to eat to me.I got my fill on some Flautas and started in on my first drink. We hung out for a bit at the house and then headed off to the first bar..We played some darts and a few drinks and then looked at our watches to realize it was about three A.M.Where most people would end their night, this is where we got in the cars and drove up the mountain to catch a late night band.Once again something I would never think could be possible. We watched the bands for a few hours and then decided to head to a club.Yes we were still not done yet at five.We stayed, danced and laughed at the conversations about what American people consider Spanish music. The sun started coming up so that was our cue to head home.We said our goodbyes and got home as the people who had to work at camp Saturday morning were heading out to work.I fell into my bed and before my head hit the pillow I was asleep. …Thank you Spain for another great week…………
