Our first stop en route to London was San Francisco. We were going to spend about 6 days in the area staying with Sally and Whit with Miranda also staying for the weekend. We arrived in San Francisco late morning local time where Sally was waiting to pick us all up from the airport. Sally took us back to her and Whit's place in San Ramon - about an hour to an hour and a half out of San Francisco. We spent the Saturday visiting various wineries around the Napa valley and indulging in a glass or two. Our favourite was probably a wine that was a mix of red and white which may not sound that appetising but was very nice (and reasonably cheap too). The next day it was off to the ball game to see the San Francisco Giants play. The sun came out for the day so we had a great time learning the finer details of the game and enjoying the Californian sun. The next few days were spent exploring San Francisco. We went to Fishermans Wharf where we tried some seafood chowder in Sourdough - very yummy, visited Alcatraz, biked across the Golden Gate Bridge, visited the seals at Pier 39, saw the very windy Lombard Street and rode the Cable Car. Part way through the trip we met up with Paula and some friends of hers (halfway along the Golden Gate Bridge in fact) and then went to sample some of the fine beers San Francisco has to offer - greatly needed after a hard day of cycling in the wind. All up San Francisco and the Bay Area was an amazing place. A bit windier than we expected but really friendly people, fantastic selection of beer, great sights and a very laid back attitude.
