We've both been really bad at writing on this blog, so it's now my turn to write a little something something. As our time in Costa Rica was coming to an end we decided to head back to San Jose and find a nice hostel with a pool so we could just relax in the sun. The reality, however was... I booked us a room (although lovely and big) overlooking a main road AND train line, oh and it rained a lot!
So basically no sleep and no sun tan. Boo hiss for Dan (who at this time was still very white).
Flight to Lima was fine although Dan had to pay an extra $75 for his surfboard - we were picked up at the airport by a guy called Victor (a Peruvian looking Jackie Chan) and taken to a surf camp in Punta Hermosa. A nice little village with sand and not much else. Waves were too big for me to surf but Dan managed to go out most days. He also decided that now would be a good time to buy a new board... oh and then he broke it a couple of days later. Doing a Kelly Slater type move you ask? No he was in at his ankles (near some rocks) trying to clean it when a wave got hold of it... tit!
We stayed in Punta Hermosa for just over 2 weeks and then travelled up to Mancora (North Peru). This meant we had a 17 hour bus ride was seemed long but ok - overnight, massive comfy seats, food, movies etc but it wasn't an enjoyable experience, especially once the toilet stopped working. Around 9am after a few complaints the bus pulled over for everyone and us ladies where directed to a wall for us all to wee behind!
The trauma was worth it though. We arrived in Mancora to beautiful sunshine and a hostel that gave us a lovely hut on the beach and to inform us that there would be a full moon party that evening. Being English we thought we'd start drinking early (7/8pm), to later be told that the party probably wouldn't be starting till about 1am... yes this meant we got very drunk, made fools of ourselves (no change) and we nearly got thrown out for trying to throw each other into the swimming pool!
FYI - the next day I had the worse hang over EVER and thought I was gonna die.
After 4 days we left for Montanita (Ecuador). Another over night bus and believe it or not, this one was worse than the last one thanks to the air con not working properly. The bus also arrived in Guayaquil 2 hours earlier then planned. 4 am and we were in a new city but thankfully we only had to wait an hour for the next bus to Montanita.
Thanks to boarder crossings and bus changes, I only managed to grab an hour or two of sleep, Dan however didn't manage any!
Once in Montanita, it didn't take us long to find a really nice hostel (run by some young Americans) on the beach, about a 10 min walk from the town. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to check in till 3pm (it was around 8.30am at this point) so we went for a snooze on the beach. A couple of hours later we woke up, feeling really tired and a little burnt, with a random dog sleeping next to us - nice!
