We arrived in Chiang Mai after catching the local bus from Sukhothai with Luca (the Italian dude) and I was really looking forward to it, after reading up about it. We stayed in a little s***ty hostel at first - the beds were rock hard and very uncofortable. We moved on the next day! Chiang Mai is the 2nd largest city in Thailand and it felt a little like Bangkok, without the scams, but was also alot cheaper.
We went on a trip for the day visiting the hill tribes and going into the mountains. Firstly we went on an elephant which was quite an experience! I enjoyed it - but got the feeling the elephants werent really cared for properly. Then it was time to get on a push bike. The guide told us it wouldbe both upand downhill, he talked s*** because it was uphill from the start! Stacy lasted about 2 mins! lol, Blamed it on herbike! (typical women) I made it about 50metres from the top (it was about 2-3km uphill!) and the two other girls with us (from Singapore and Malaysia) made it halfway - but one of them was totally fooked and was exhausted. Once at the top it was finally downhill and then to a hilltribe town, the tribe were called akha or summat like that.
After dinner we went white water rafting and I must admit it was very good - lasting 2 hours and having some pretty good rapids to go through. That night we were knackered so just chilled and had a reasonably early night.
In total we stayed 3 nights in Chiang Mai and I was disappointed, we got the bus to a place called Pai (in the mountains) - and were warned before-hand about the journey. People usually chuck up on the way due to the 762 corners that you have to navigate through!
