After the amusing bus journey to from Battambang (stupid yanks complaining about everything and anything!) we arrived in Phnom Penh. We made our way to our hostel via tuk tuk and decided to go see the killing fiellds and genocide museum the next day. The genocide museum (S21) was very disturbing but worth seeing. It was originally a school before the Khmer Rouge took control on 17th April 1975. Only 7 people came out of there alive, this was because they were sculptors and could be used to presumably portray the leader, Pol Pot. 14 people were found there after the Vietnamese defeated the Khmer Rouge but they were dead and were then buried at the sight. Each room had in some instruments of torture and also some history regarding how people were tortured, why they were there and what the outside world thought was happening in Cambodia at the time. Quite interesting and I have never been in a museum for so long - think we were there for 3 hours or more.
After the genocide museum we went to the killing fields where alot of the deceased from S21 were buried. Others were killed there, including kids and babies. One grave that was dug up had more than 10,000 dead in. Another had 450 with no head and still the remains of childrens clothing.
We had a great meal that night at a small resaurant, had some beers and I beat Stace at pool. The mnext day we left for the river side and went to see the Royal palace and silver pagoda. It was rather boring as it looked like the royal palace in Bangkok! $6 to get in aswell, but good to see never-the-less. That night we went to a blues and jazz bar which was so so, but the beer is quite good out here, whicj is a relief.
We stayed 4 nights altogether and after discussing at length where to go and what to do, we set off for the Mekong up North.
