After the 7 hour boat journey down the river and spending 6 hours of this in the heat of the day - hence burning ourselves all over! Theres a pic of Stacys leg that shows the difference of skin exposed! Apart from that the journey was great with some awesome views of the river and of the villages on the river, basically houses on stilts! Its over 2 weeks since that trip and shes still red raw and peeling, ha ha ha. Anywho - the first few days we just chilled and wandered about. Then we went to the Bustop guesthouse as it had been recommended to us. I had my first full english fry up there the first morning! 2 fried eggs, 2 REAL pork sausages, HEINZ baked beans, bacon, mushrooms, hash brown and toast - and yes it was awesome. we then got a tuk tuk driver that took us to the killing caves where the Khmer Rouge massared approx 10,000 people, the remains were in a stupa so the deceased could (hopefully)rest easy in the afterlife.
We also visited another Wat - called Banam, it was cool, but just another Wat to us. Then finally the only vinery in Cambodia and tried the wine (not very good) but the grape juice was very nice and we bought 2 bottles - although it was expensive grape juice! ($1.50)
The day after we went to the smoking pot restaurant for a cooking lesson. The person who owns the restaurant was brought up in a kind of concentration camp or something as a child during the Khmer rouge era. We went to the market to buy our ingredients, which was pretty cool - due to it being slightly different to going to asda! The fish were alive in a bowl, we asked how many we wanted and they weighed them, then started bashing their heads with blunt knives! ha ha ha - Stacy wasnt impressed, I was laughing. I had te honour of carrying the dead fish in a bag, one of the fish was still moving even though it had no head! Obviously I had to tease people with this oportunity! Once all the food was bought we went back to prepare our grub. Unfortunately we didnt get to gut the fish ourselves, but someone else did it for us. We cooked fish Amok (Stace made veg Amok) which is made with coconut milk and very nice, Beef Lok Lak (Stace made fish) which is made with chilli sauce, oyster sauce and fish sauce, also very good, aand then chicken soup (Stace made fish soup) also very nice. We also learnt how to make the curry paste. All in all it was a very good morning and we met Matt and Jo who had lived in NZ for 8 months.
Time to move on again and we decided to go Phnom Penh, the capital. 4 hrs only for this bus journey.
