Blog Day 60 - 63 Tues 5th - Fri 8th July 2011
Day 60 The next 4 days are all about getting ourselves back on the mend. Dan is now not feeling to great either & the after going to see the doctor we get told the same infection has kicked in for Dan, 4 days after Trish. The doctor explains that because he has more of a cast iron stomach, his body tried to fight it but now cannot do it alone, fortunately he doesn't need any injections to the hip but we do both need some stronger pills to completely fight it off. Some good news is the fever Trish had has almost gone. We are both absolutely knackered especially after the Elephant Camp. We get told to rest up & completely avoid dairy, fruit juices & beer again. So plain rice, bread & any other type of boring food it is. Even this is hard to swallow without us feeling sick.
Day 61 We have to go back for the doctor to see us again, Trish is starting to feel much better now but to add insult to injury today we are here because overnight we have developed a red itchy rash all up our legs. The doctor says it was from some sort of bug that must have bitten us a couple of times whilst at the elephant camp. It has injected something into us that has caused our legs to look like they have acne. More pills send us skipping all the way back to our hotel. We later find out that Liz & Daryl also got this rash.
Later on we go to the town to get a few bits (it's about 10mins walk from where we are staying) as we turn a corner there is an English dude (who is looking rather worse for wear) having an argument with a Thai lady at a stall, as soon as he sees us he comes out with this whole story of…
'can you help me, I did something really stupid last night, got really drunk, woke up here this morning, my wallet's been stolen, I have no money & I don't know where my hotel is, all I need is 50B to get a taxi to meet a friend I know just out of town, he will be able to help me & blah, blah, blah'.
Well anyone would think that it would be ok to help this guy out, I mean 50B isn't really a lot, but it's self-inflicted, his fault for getting into that state in the first place. I'm not sure why he's kicking off with this Thai lady but he seems to have really upset her, we really don't want to get involved, we feel like crap, he looks like a tramp & just want to get to the shop & back (Enough excuses).
Now if we get involved we are doomed to be there forever, we don't even know if he is speaking the truth & we just want to walk away, so Dan just shrug's & goes off in some French babble! You should have seen the look on the guys face, he looked so annoyed at himself, he still attempted to try & explain speaking really slowly & making all kinds of hand gestures. He must have still been drunk because Dan can't even speak French! The guy gives up & walks away looking for the next mug that is going to give him some money. Satisfied we hit the shop & back in silence just in case he comes across us again.
Day 62 After popping into sees the doctor for a quick checkup we spend the day chilling out & sleeping again! When we were in Bangkok we invested in a little portable DVD player & it has proved to be invaluable so far, money defiantly well spent for a time like this. We do however venture out in the evening to Chaing Mai night market where Trish buys a dress & couple of pairs of harem ¾ trousers. As we are walking along the market we come across a few stalls selling simple magic tricks. This market must have 3 or 4 magic stalls and Dan stops at each of them to show the seller a trick. Some go down well but others we just get the impression that they want him out the way so they can sell their toot. We also pass a Subway & it's a real Subway. Not the kind with trains but the kind with delicious sandwiches filled with all the things we're not allowed to eat. GODDAMIT! We both decide though that it's too much temptation and dive in!
Day 63 Our last day in Chiang Mai and we are booked to go & do a Thai cooking class today which we have been putting off for days now due to illness on Trish's behalf, unfortunately though Dan still can't face the smells of food & Trish knows how he feels because even walking past a street stall is enough to make us heave at the moment, it's no fun. So we decide to cut our losses & cancel the class, unfortunately there is no refund but we do manage to blag the company into bringing us a couple of copies of the Thai cooking books that they give you if you do the course so not all is lost completely & at least we can still try cook Thai food when we get home. Another visit to the doctors & this time he gives us some different pills to get our delicate stomachs back to normal completely & doesn't charge us thankfully! Our legs are still sore so he also gives us some cream for that too & then it's another evening in the hotel room listening to the inhouse band play the same song set as they have for the past 3 nights. Joy. Still tomorrow we say goodbye to Chiang Mai and to head to Vietnam.
