It seems like a long time ago that we first wrote about arriving in Sydney! We have done a lot since then - mainly sightseeing in and around Sydney - we are going to upload some photos.
We left Sydney last Sunday intending to drive inland to find some farmwork. The first town we drove to was Orange, still in New South Wales. Here we went to the harvest jobs service and they told us that they happened to have some plum picking for us in Young - 2 hours drive away. So we arrive in Young on Monday, and started picking on the Tuesday. We picked from 7am until 2pm (when the weather became too hot) and we earned a grand total of $40 between 2 of us!! That wasn't because we were picking slow either so we can't understand how anyone would make money to travel earning that! So unsurprisingly we gave up on farmwork and decided to come down to Melbourne, where we currently have just arrived, to find 'proper' jobs. This means that we might not be able to do the 88 days farmwork to come back for a 2nd year (if we needed or decided).
We both have interviews lined up for tomorrow, so fingers crossed something will happen for one of us, or both of us!
It was Australia Day on Thursday and we camped for 3 nights in a lovely free campsite on the banks of the Murray River. Last night we drove south to be closer to Melbourne, and we planned to camp in another free campsite in a forest. Just as we were settling in for the night a HUGE storm came and we had to abandon the tent to make a quick dash for the car! Forturnately the rain subsided, and we drove back to the tent to find a large rip in the back of the tent courtesy of a big branch that had fallen from the tree above in the heavy rain. We chucked everything in the back of the car. We were scared of the lightening and getting soaked to the skin aswell - and then drove back onto the highway. So last night we ended up parked in a service station watching the cricket on the TV and drying out!
We are now in the Travellers Trax hostel in Collingwood, Melbourne. We have only booked here for 2 nights so we probably will move, job depending, and once we have discovered the better areas of the city to stay.
Now to upload all the Sydney photos.....
