We are on the road again after our car was finally fixed last week! We also got the car serviced while we were in Adelaide.
We left Melbourne on Sunday the 4th March - taking the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide. There is so much to see along the way, it's really scenic and there was lots of photo opportunities! We stopped in a nice little free campsite half way along the route, where there was wild koalas inhabiting the trees. The next morning as we were leaving, we spotted what looked like a grey bulldog shaped animal crossing the road... on closer inspection we saw it was a large koala which we filmed and photographed climbing a tree near the road! Danny managed to get a photo of it looking right into the camara lens.
Next stop was Adelaide. We only planned 1 day (2 nights) in Adelaide, so we didn't get to see much of the city - but of the sights we did see it appeared very historic in places (no high rise glass buildings, etc). We took the bus into the city in the morning whilst the car was getting serviced. The city itself is surrounded by parkland on all sides and on Wednesday afternoon we took a short walk along a river to the city edge and back through the botanical gardens.
Last night we were in Port Augusta, which is on the edge of the Flinders Ranges. We didn't see much of the town, as we were quite tired from the drive and it was a very hot day too.
Today we have driven from Port Augusta to Coober Pedy, which took about 6 hours! Coober Pedy is famous for mining opals and it's underground houses and shops (to shelter locals from the heat of the summer and the cold winter nights!). The landscape around here is very barren and arid, very different to what we are used to along the coast! We expect it to get even more arid the closer we get toward Ayers Rock.
Tomorrow we have a very long drive to Ayers Rock, which we hope to reach in time for the sunset viewing of the Rock.
