So we left Ayr last Saturday after we both finished Mango picking the week before. We really enjoyed being in a hostel and at work with lots of lovely fellow backpackers! The work was really hard at times; especially when temperatures hit 37 degrees, Laura got about 20 mozzie bites in a day, and Danny contracted a horrible itchy mango rash. However, we have managed to save a bit of money that will hopefully keep us going until the beginning of February.
After leaving Ayr, we booked into a backpacker resort in Airlie Beach (the Whitsundays, where we were for L's birthday). The weather was so uncomfortable - really humid and extremely hot - that we had to move into a air-conditioned dorm room on the 3rd and last night of our stay. On the 1st day, however, we did manage to go for a swim in the amazing Cedar Creek Falls (see photo, which doesn't do it justice but thought you might like to see our lovely faces!). The water was really cooling and we had a relaxing day. As Danny's rash wasn't getting any better (in fact much more itchy!) in the humid weather, we decided we had to move south as soon a possible to the fresher climate!
We stopped off in Rockhampton, and then planned to go to the Turtle Rookery near Bundaberg the night after. We paid $10 each to see a turtle laying and burying it's eggs and making it's way back to the sea. It was really good- we got to see a 1 metre long Flatback turtle that laid 70 snooker ball-sized eggs! There was also loads of information in a centre dedicated to the turtles - as it is a very special well-known beach (Mon Repos, if you want to look it up!) where lots of species of sea turtles go to lay their eggs.
We then planned to go back to the Sunshine Coast, where we are right now, as we really liked Noosa and the beaches last time we came up the coast, after leaving Brisbane. Today we have looked around the exclusive shops in Noosa, which is supposed to be where rich people from Brisbane and Sydney come to holiday, and also completed a short walk this afternoon along the coastline in Noosa National Park. The weather is much more comfortable down here.
We plan to stay here on the Sunshine Coast until Monday, where we may move inland to a cheaper campsite, as prices are a bit more expensive here due to it being children's school Christmas holidays and being near the beach!
We are booked into a hostel on the Gold Coast called Couple O' Days from Boxing day until the 3rd January, so we are still not sure where we will be for Christmas Day!
