Newark, NJ - Washington, D.C
Miles travelled - 205
Woke up this morning feeling very refreshed after an amazing nights sleep, which I was so glad about. I really didn't fancy the long journey in the bus clutching a sick bag for dear life.
Early rise for both Emily and I, had long showers then spent a while drying and straightening our hair. We figured it might be the last time for a few days before we got to experience the same!
Checked out the room then met with the other Trekkers, got some coffee and breakfast (which I could actually stomach today, winning!!) and awaited out trek leader. In total there were 23 of us, ranging between 18 and 41 and the median being about 24.
The two groups were allocated and the leaders introduced themselves as Ally and Jeanie, with Ally being our leader. Spent a while in the hotel confirming safety info and other boring bits but then at 9am it was on to packing the van and hitting the road!
The van and trailer don't look like anything grand, but it's our home for the next 64 days! Jodie, Becca and I occupied the back seat and the hilarity and singing commenced. We stopped at a service station for lunch then another few for bathroom breaks. Had a big stop in Baltimore, Maryland at Walmart where we stocked up on snacks, water and most importantly, PILLOWS!
Also had a little snoop around the liquor store (Walmart sell guns but no alcohol, what's that all about?!) and the girls got some spirits. I found my beloved marshmallow vodka but as I'd already bought some in duty free I figured I'd finish one bottle first! Don't want to get a name for myself already!
A little after 3pm we arrived at Cherry Hill RV Park, slightly outside Washington. A lovely sunny day so we set up camp and get dinner on the stove and crack open our drinks, nice time chilling with everyone. After dinner me and the chipmunks (becca and Jodie) had washing up duty then we headed into Washington.
The two treks were together which was great, cuz we all knew each other via facebook before the trip and we all got to hang out. Visited the Lincoln memorial and managed to bump into someone that knows my dad (could only happen to a Steele!) then visited Washington monument, the Korean war veterans memorial, WW2 memorial, and Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" inscription. All beautiful places to see at night when they're lit up -pictures to follow. Then we returned to camp for 11pm for an early but very cold sleep in the tents.

Karen Steele (mammy) Hey, it looks like your having a great time. Ha, imagine going all those miles away only to bump into someone that knows your dad, surreal. I rated your blog but the ipad would only let me put one star :( Really wanted to put four but I'll try and find out how to do it for the next time. Xxxx
