Hey, its the 12th of feb today and Im sat in gilligans backpackers in cairns. My flight to cairns from singapore was pretty interesting- the computer system that Jetstar airways use to check passengers in wasnt usable, so they had to manually check people in and some of the staff had no idea what they were doing and mislabelled luggage and took about 20 mins to check in one person (there were only 2 check in desks). We were still queuing to check in long after boarding time! We had to run to the boarding gate- didnt get to eat or drink, hadnt eaten since brekkie, and then we sat on the plane for 2 hours while they sorted out confused luggage. Eventually we left, but we had some kids on board who wouldnt stop crying- me and suzanne didnt sleep much, and I had some big women behind me yanking my seat back everytime she stood up- it was like a rocking chair lol! When we got to Darwin they confused everyones boarding passes, so more delay. And then we were off to cairns, and I got on suzanne's hotels' bus from the airport to her resort (pretending to be staying at their hotel so didnt pay for bus) and then me and suzanne went to her room- the resort is nice, though she did have a wierd roomate who is also on her OZ bus tour- ellie, young and wierd- lesbain, german, and super clingy. We left pretty quickly, and I pretended to be a hotel guest again to get the resort's free bus to town, where we went to my hostel.
My hostel in cairns is gilligans backpackers- awesome, the place to be in cairns by far. We were both half asleep but we went round cairns, did a bit of shopping, and I booked a safari tour round Cape Tribulation for tomorrow. We also learnt about how the cyclone caused flooding that cut all the south roads off and travellers have had to stay in cairns. Hopefully we'l be able to go south...meanwhile people are talking about the horrific bush fires in the south, melbourne- 170 people have died so far, and many homeless.
Me and suzanne went to The Wool Shed and had a massive meal- it was 5.00 for the meal, a dessert (brownies and ice cream, my fav), and a drink from the bar- vodka of course. It was really nice in there, nice atmosphere. We then went to O'Briens and brought a drink there- irish pub. Sat outside and talked for ages and ages. Managed to stay awake despite skipping a nights sleep. Then we went to Gilligans bar and club, and we had five drinks for ten dollars. It ended up as a proper night out as we met Phil there, stephen and a german guy whos name i cant remember sorry (all in my doom, i was the only girl). We had a fab time- me and suzanne stayed til about 2am, then she got a taxi bk to her resort, and I went to mine and got ready for safari trip. Got to bed around 3, up at 6 for early pickup at 7.
My sarafi day was awesome- really manic day, saw loads and did loads- went with Bily Tea bush safaris, 4WD truck thing. We went to Palm cove and Trinity beach (nice beaches near cairns) and then Mossman (nice town). Saw the sugar cane, daintree tea and other agricultural crops. Went down Daintree river via cruiseboat and saw loads of wildlife and jungle plants- saw green tree snake, the biggest croc- Scarface, a right bully apparently. He was massive! We then got bk on the truck and did a rainforest boardwalk (way easier than the treks I did in singapore rainforest, still interesting- I forgot insect repellent lol and got attacked by the mozzies). I met some people on the tour and weve got plenty of photos to share. We went to daintree lookout point- stunning view of sea, beach and rainforest. Then we went to a bar and had lunch and hand fed some big red kangaroos- so friendly! Then we went on our 4WD drive deeper into dain tree national park (oldest rainforest in the world!). We saw s*** loads of massive spiders- theyre everywhere (esp in the girls loos for some reason- they move so fast!). We got stuck in a couple of places due to landslides, and then made it to the most beautiful place ive seen so far- Emmagon creek, so private and tucked away in the forest- we were a small group and we went swimming in the creek- water was crystal clear and fish were everywhere! The recent floods had made it much bigger. We sampled loads of fruits too for another lunch, and daintree tea. We then had to head back. It was such a fab day, I hardly noticed my hangover! Oh, and we went to cape tribulation beach too, white sand and nobody there but us!
I got bk around 7 and didnt bother going to my room for a bit- I went straight o gilligans bar and met suzanne and some people from her resort who were also on her bus tour. Some of them went back to the resort later on- me, suzanne, and jenny from her bus group. We ended up having a fab girls night in gilligans, also went to another bar- cant remember the name right now...and we were the last ones on the dance floor by far lol. They had a happy hour- as many drinks as you can have in one hour, I got 12, not bad! Downed them, checked the ice out the glasses, and went round to all the different bar stass as fast as poss. Met loads of guys there- one was from Sydney and he was pretty fit, I spent alot of time with him, and Jenny found a guy too. The music was fab. At the end of the night- 2am ish i think, I said goodbye to suzanne and jenny- their bus trip leaves in the morn. Im going to miss suzanne, we had an incredible time and shes such good fun. We might bump into each other- maybe at the whitsundays, all the different bus trips go there.
I went o bed about 3, got up at 7 to wait for sarah to arrive- her plane was late and she got here around 10, I was so happy to see her! So exciting, not long til we get the OZ bus on sat, weather permitting. We sorted her stuff out and walked round cairns- went to the harbour, booked a great barrier reef snorkeling trip for tomorrow. We got OZ sim cards and new numbers, dis some shopping then came bk to hostel and had lunch, and for the first time I actually sat in my hostel room and chilled out. Now sarahs getting some sleep and Ive caught up with my blog yay. Bring on tomorrow!
