Due to popular demand, i have decided it is Bungles turn to blog!!!!
Arrived in Brasilia on the 6th with Neia in tow, met Marystelle, emotional!!, hot, then hot and dry, everyone was lovely, forest fires evereywhere, nice people, good food, great beer, amazing house!!!!
Think that should do it... lovely jubbly ... till next time..... peace!!
Well thanks for that Dean!!! ..... Brasilia deserves a little more blog space than that so.......... After our first internal Brazillian flight (i was pleasantly suprised, nice leg room, we got fed, friendly staff and real pilots!) we arrived to be met by Maristell (another ex employee, who is a wonderful lady) we went straight to an all you can eat buffet - Brilliant! and sampled yet more delicious Brazillian fare. Honestly the Brazillians are feeders!! no hope of dropping that stone again!!
When we arrived at Maristelles house we were blown away, what a contrast to Vitoria! We had our own private room and a pool outside. The house, well Condo is in a plot of eight about 5 mins from the airport. Brasilia is a relativly new area, only 50 years old all the buildings have a strong American influence and feel, the city is split into sectors, you have one sector full of eateries, one full of bars and night clubs, one sector of government buildings and so on - very strange and reminded me of that computor game Simms!??
Needless to say Brasilia being the capital is a very rich state and boy did it show, it was honestly like we had arrived in a differnt country, When we dined with Maristelle and her Lawyer husband in the poshest fish retuarant i have ever seen we had to give ourselves a little pinch - were we actually still travelling!?
Maristelle was amazing with helping us plan the rest of the internal flights we needed throughout Brazil, Bolivia and Peru. Its a minefield as a traveller as you cant book anything online unless you have a CPF number and a Brazillian credit card which you obviously dont have unless you are a citizen here, so as travellers we would usually need to take a trip direct to the airport or to a tourist agency and book flights. These however were coming in double, sometimes triple the price!!! but Maristelle came to our rescue and we bagged a couple of bargains which is brilliant but means we are set now to more of an itinerey (this is a shame because we are missing our Rio buddies, Steve and Jen and have now narrowed the chances of us all getting together again!!
We spent most of our days lazing around the pool and went on a nighttime tour of all the presidntial buildings, by night we also ate, and ate some more!! The Brazillian BBQ (CHURRASCO) is the best eating experiance i think Dean and i have had in all our lives (small things please!) you have a huge buffet to choose from with every kind of rice, salad, cheese and spice that there could possible be. You then sit at your table and Garcon (waiter) after Garcon come to your table equipt with a piece of succulent meat on a scewer and a huge carving knife and you literally choose what you want and what cut - they do not waste one part of the animal here so we have (much to my dismay!) unknowingly sample the odd tougne and pigs trotter buy hey when in Rome and all that!
One eve we went back to Mristelles whilst everyone went off to work and the arrangement was for Antonio to come and collect us at around 6 and take us to a meeting (with some local teenagers who really wanted to meet us and practise their conversational English - amazing kids!!) so we got ready and noone arrived (not uncommon in Brasillian time we have came to learn!) however at 7pm a lady who we had briefly met the day before at the churassco) came bursting through the door talking at 100 miles per hour, confussed and dazed Dean and i picked up on the words ´fire´éverywhere´and ´lets go´. Now i need to set the scene... Brasilia is very hot and extremly dry and it hasnt rained here in 100 days so on arrival Maristell pointed out all the fires in the distance caused from cigerettes being thrown out the window and also huge burnt out areas as we were driving along.
So after Linda´s manic appearance and the little words we could make out, what with the impending smoke we could now start to smell and the now noticable smoke in the room i started to panic, Dean (although he begs to differ) had panic in his eyes also!! I could just imagine the fire engulfing the house and Linda had arrived to save us so gatherng our things quickly and being told we should leave our bags and passports behind we were ready to open the door and face whatever it was behind it! Accept now Linda´s asking me to go and get a bottle of water from the fridge and i have this full blown image in my head that we are going to use the water to douse down the fire and drive through it hoping and praying we make it out the other side. So i do as im told and Dean opens the door to.... more smoke yes and a glowing orange skyline. yes the fires had spread and were all around us but in actual fact the condo was safe and the concorete road out!! was fine also just the hedgerows and fields alight. It was an unbelievable sight however i was far too happy to take it all in and too thankful for my life!! when we arrived at the meeting we explained what we thought was happening and all had a giggle as apparently Linda is known for her general eratic pacing and talking at 100 miles per hour!!! Very funny eve, way to get the heart racing!!
Brasilia was a brilliant experiance, the people were amazing and we had a wonderful time living the highlife and were not allowed to put our hands in our pockets once which was just so incredibly kind (and pretty lucky as we cant afford that kind of indulgence whilst backpacking!) however my heart seems to be left behind in Vitoria im afraid - give us the simple life and the laughter that came with it anyday!
Speaking of simple life, left behind hearts and laughter the ´Big Mamas Casa´fund has officially kicked off with its first ever donation - you beautys - you know who you are, your photos are going up on the wall (when we have a wall!)
