We headed out to the Reef on Monday. The day didn't start well when I realised that I had left the camera battery charging in the camper - so there'd be no photos of our trip to the reef. The ride out wasn't great as both David and I felt a bit woozy.
First stop was Saxon Reef. David would do one dive here and one at the next stop, Hastings Reef. I was only snorkelling. Hastings reef was much larger and more interesting than Saxon. David's air lasted a bit longer on the second dive so he got to see a lot more. After each dive he joined me for a bit of snorkelling. The tour provided a BBQ lunch, which was very enjoyable. And any of our earlier unease was gone after the first dive/snorkel. I had thought the reef would be brighter than it was - but the colours were still amazing. Heaps of fish to see. David saw a reef shark, but no turtles or dolphins.
The Cairns esplanade area is nice. They have a pool there and also a pier. We went for a walk along the pier and watched all the boats come in from the various reef tours. We were also checking out some of the amazingly huge yachts that were in dock. What you do with a lot of money!
The last part of our time in Cairns was spent doing more chores. Our last full day there it rained most of the day. We treated ourselves to a night out - found a pub with $8 jugs for happy hour and another with $5 meals. Life on a budget.
Next move from here we're not sure - just keep heading north.
