Friday 24th June:
We got up early to catch the public bus to the southern coastal town of sihanoukville. It was a 6 hour trip which was made slightly more amusing by the karaoke videos being played on the tv screens. After stopping once we arrived at around 2ish. We would be staying in beach bungalows that were 2 minutes walk from the beach.
We headed straight for the beach for some food and were immediately confronted by loads of cambodian kids wanting us to buy their bracelets. After having our first burger since being away we set up camp on the beach. Despite the constant swarm of children selling bracelets and wanting to play pool for money and old women offering massage, we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon on the beach.
In the evening we went back to the beach, which was lined with bars and resturants, for a seafood BBQ. We were able to sit on the beach and eat before heading to the end of the beach to a bar called JJ's. Here there were whiskey buckets available for $2, of which we had a few whilst watching the fireshow on the beach. On the way back Tim and a canadian guy from the group discovered the only other club in the small town called utopia, which was based around a swimming pool. Meanwhile, Dan had managed to locate the only place selling food at 4am - the local pizza takeaway.
Saturday 25th:
We were awoken this morning by a huge storm - our first glimpse of the rainy season! This woke us up at around 7am and was when Dan first discovered that he needed to make first use of his imodium supplies!
Once the weather had cleared up and Dan had recovered, we hit the beach for some lunch. The kids were out in force again and one followed Tim up the beach with a stick after he refused to play him at pool! We both then enjoyed a full body massage for just $5 before gathering the troops (and one of the local kids) for a go on the bannana boat! Tim then decided to rent a jetski and after a shaky start, finally got the hang of it and tore up the waves. After being brought back to the beach by the jetski man, we sat in the water as the sun set and music from the bars started to get going, thinking 'this is the life'.
We headed to the same resturant for dinner and negotiated ourselves a free drink each before tucking into a pizza. Again we headed down to JJ's armed with free drink vouchers that we had hoarded throughout the day from the various promoters along the beach. Once these had run out we headed to Utopia with the group were we sat drinking the local beer with our legs in the pool. Tim eventually plucked up the courage to get in the rather discoloured water with a few other guys before getting a lift down the hill to our bunglaows in his boxers! The night had lasted ALOT longer than we had intended so we went straight to bed at around 4ish.
