Taupo (part 2 )
In the land of Mordor, in the fires of Mount Doom, Dan and Dave forged in secret a tuna sandwich,to control all others. And into this sandwich they poured, tuna, mayo and cheese slices, and the will to dominate all other tuna sandwiches. One sandwich to rule them all.
The Tongariro crossing.......
So an early start up at 5 not good when you have one too many beers the night before. We arrive at the foot of the mountain at 7 to start the 17km hike up Mount Doom and across to the other side. Without a ring in sight we set of at a pace that if Frodo and Sam had done there would only of been 2 films. The pace is only short lived maybe a little nieve of us to think that you would have to do a bit of climbing going up a mountain. But with our supreme fitness levels we battle though, bare in mind this is the flat bit of the journey and i am blowing out of my ass, so we stop for some elvish bread and some water.
Crampons on........ we star to climb the icey assent of mount Doom (how Frodo and Sam did this barefoot i'll never know) after a gruelling climb and an hour and a half later we reach red crater sadly we wouldnt be going much further than this due to the extreme cold and 60k winds hitting the mountain.
So the tuna sandwiches are brought out and at the foot of Mount Doom we eat and take lots of pictures. The scenery is just out of this world.
I think this has to be the highlight of the trip so far for myself and Dave we will neve forget them tuna sandwiches on Mount doom.
From Taupo we head to Wellington with not a bungy or a sky dive under our belts our time in the north island is short lived. After a night in New Zealands capital we hop onto a ferry and make haste for the south island.
