Taupo (Part 1)
This is only part one due to the lack of internet time remaining!!!
Taupo has a massive lake - biggest in the southern hemisphere, it was created by a volcanic eruption - the next one, we were informed, was due 800 years ago so this made us a little apprehensive!!!
Anyway.... stayed at the urban retreat lodge which is cheap beer wise so always a winner!!
In torrential downpours it was decided that the bikinis should be brought out of the bags for a little wet weather kayaking!! After getting ourselves comfortable on the water, it was time for a bit of experimentation!!! A challenge was thrown out there - who can raft standing up??? I (Dave) can not it appears!!! Dan's efforts were a lot more successful but brought to a premature end by our guide. The moment dan made it to his feet, steven flew at dan in his kayak rocking him all over the place. Amateur move on stevens part. Out of sheer desperation, dan lept like a spider monkey from his own kayak onto ste's capsising them both into the freezing waters!!!
Steven was not so bold again - having a flying fat english man come at him once was bad enough
The leisurely stroll continued including myself thinking it was a good idea to kayak through a waterfall. It's not - 1. It's cold 2. It's wet and 3. It fills your kayak with water resulting in a sinking kayak (Think Titanic on just a slightly smaller scale)
Finally we made it to the end of the river - Just before Huka falls (for those who have seen them, they flow extremely quickly). Well Dan thought he would try and be funny and scare the guide and not pull over just before the falls!!! Bad, BAD idea.
Before he knew it dan was torpedo-ing towards huka falls to the laughter of me and the sheer horror of poor steve!!! Who had to take his own life into his hands to rescue dan!!! I'm glad to report that both dan and steve are fine. But dans swimshorts have seen cleaner days
Must Dash - further Taupo reports to come soon!!!!
