We got hardly any sleep last night due to my stupidity. I would have had maybe 30 mins and Jac 1.5 hours. Before going to bed I loaded the map of our hotel in my iPhone to make navigating easy when we got to Istanbul. I normally do this and recheck our flight and accommodation details with plenty of time, but this time I left it until the last minute. As I loaded the map I was struggling to find the nearest railway station, so I did a distance check between the hotel and Istanbul city centre. It was 12 hours away. Somehow I had booked us in Kusadasi which is a resort town south of Istanbul. From then it was an intense hour of finding new accommodation and canceling the old booking. Unfortunately it was nearly midnight so we had missed the cancellation window. After scanning through the terms we were lucky to find that if we cancelled late or didn't show up we would only be charged the first night of €30. Talk about dodging a bullet. We also found cheaper and nicer accommodation, even in Istanbul. Crisis averted luckily without much loss. I normally check things that I book plenty of times but somehow this one slipped through the cracks. I think it was when we spent 6 hours on the computer in Rome booking this part of our journey. It is a lesson learned but as a result we were both wound up and our minds were racing, resulting in little sleep.
Today we were up at 4ish and got ready, then to the train station. We arrived at the airport quicker than we were expecting so spent a fair bit of time sitting around. We eventually boarded and arrived in Istanbul to rainy skies. As we were not at the main airport we grabbed some bus tickets for the 40km trip into the city. We had to wait 1.5 hours which was very frustrating but eventually got underway.
The drive to the city was great although maybe it would have been better if our driver wasn't playing with his phone. A couple of hairy moments. It was a good reason to enjoy the sights until we arrived in the city and off the expressway. We were dropped at our diggs which has a great feel and is in a comfortable part of the city.
As we have had b***** all sleep we grabbed a feed, who ripped is off but lesson learned, and retired for the night. We are looking forward to exploring as the city has a great vibe to it. Hopefully tomorrow will be a sunnier day.
