Today was a day of reflection and sadness. We headed off to Brandenberg Gate to join up for a tour of Sachsenhausen concentration camp. It was a train trip of about 30 mins before we arrived at Oranienburg. From their it was a walk of about 10 mins to the camp which was on the edge of the town. We pretty much traced the journey by train and road that the prisons would have been taken on.
It was the first concentration camp built by the Nazis and set the standard for all those to follow. Only some of the camp is still standing but it still gives you a feel of the place. What these prisoners went through is so tragic and I guess you could never imagine the horrors they were subjected to. I won't explain any more but it was a humbling experience that moved both of us. Such a tragic part of human history but one that should never be forgotten. You would hope mankind would learn from this but sadly tragedies like this still exist today.
We got talking to a Canadian, Justin, on the train trip home. He came and joined us in the hotel lobby for a few drinks. Of course a few drinks always turns into a few more drinks. We were also joined by Tania, another Canadian who we had met the night before. It was a great way to spend the evening after such an emotionally draining day. Drinks, great people and a lot of laughs. Just perfect.
