I have arrived in the Czech Republic with my friend Dan for a few days of travel. We met out at Stansted airport yesterday & had a pretty uneventful 1.5 hour flight over to Brno. We were picked up at the airport by Radim, one of Dans friends, who took us to our hotel. We checked in & rested up for an hour before meeting back up with Radim to head out & sample the local food & beer. We were taken to a Czech pub for a traditional feed and quite a few half litre jugs of pilsners, a local lager. I ordered a beef that is covered in gravy, with bread dumplings, whipped cream & cranberry sauce. It is probably the nicest feed I have had since leaving Australia. We were then joined by Jan, one of Radims friends, & headed off to a second bar. This venue was unlike anything I have been to before. It has 4 beer taps at the table where you can pour the beer whenever you like. Then on top of the taps is an LCD screen where you can order shots or food & it arrives shortly after. After 4 or 5 shots & quite a lot of beer things really started to get quite hazy. We stayed for an hour or two, although who really remembers at this stage, before heading to our final establishment. It was here that Dan & I had to get rid of some of the alcohol from our systems. Although mine was tactical, I'm not sure Dan had any choice. We finished up & headed off for the obligatory gyro before passing out in bed about 4.30am. Awesomely epic night!!! The next day, or the same day I guess, we were up at lunch time when Radim picked us up to taxi us around & show us the sights of Brno. The city has about 400,000 people but doesn't seem that large. The streets are very quiet, even on a Saturday, which is nice as we don't have to fight through crowds like London. We got to see most of Brno before heading back for a rest as we were heading to the big ice hockey match that night. Later we met up with Radim who had supplied us with team scarves & we headed into the jam of our standing room positions. The match was amazing with the team chants adding to the atmosphere, although we had no idea what they were singing. The game was tough & fast & is now one of my favorite sports. We won 4-1 which made everyone happy, well everyone except the opposition no doubt. After it's all over the players came out several times to interact & thank the fans. Then it was off to a pub for a few beers & a feed to round out a great night. We then said our goodbyes to Radim & had a wander around the cathedral & town to take some photos before heading back to bed. Tomorrow we have an early start as we are catching a bus up to Prague for the day. We have loved our time in Brno and not being a touristy spot just made it all the better. A big shout out to Radim for being an awesome tour guide & looking after us. Nothing like a local to show you a foreign city. He definately made it the great time it was.
