Greetings from Chaing Mai,
Ok so we love Chaing Mai, even more so when you get out of the city and do some treking. We got back today from a two day one night trek. It started out with an elephant ride which was great, they kept stoping to eat grass and branches, those trunks are super strong! we discoverd aswell that if you wern't quick enough giving them the banana they are reaching for, you get a nice big blow of elephant snot which i managed to get on my hand and face...there is a picture catching that oh so special moment.
Once off Nelly we started the big climb which seemed to go on forever and ever, a good two hours in the heat. The clouds had come in by the time we reached the top at our camp so we didnt get the spectacular view but we had a pretty good one still.
The camp was 3 wooden huts, one big one with matresses and nets, another where the guide and some locals were cooking and sleeping and then a little one with two toilets in...loo with a view though! although im not sure you could really class them as toilets, all the hygiene and modestly went flying out the window..thank god for anit-bac! So we had dinner and a few beers and when it got dark we all sat around some candles with our guide playing the guitar...rather serreal moment when you look around and your sat at the top of a mountin with a bunch of strangers and a thai man singing oasis wonder wall! And mum you never guess what he started playing...Hey Jude!!! we all started singing along, great moment :)
So day two and we had a long treck down alot of steep rocky bits, then a nice stop off at a waterfall for a swim..it was super cold but the thought of squating over a hole in a ant infested hut was enough to get me diving in head first for a pee!! after another hour or so we stopped at the river and did some white water rafting which was really funny, no one fell in though which was a shame! And then after the white water it was onto bamboo rafting, it ended up beig one big raft and we all just sat and got taken down stream by a little raft man.
So now we are home and totally pooped! had a really great time here in Chain Mai, loads of temples..i think damo is templed and buddahd out! i still love them. Oh yeh in the photos i have got some close ups of monks..they arnt real! creepy, we were waiting for them to jump out but they are wax works.
So we leave in the morning for our bus up to Chaing Rai, still cant believe what we are doing, we have to pinch ourselves sometimes..its amazing and we have so much more to come :)
Oh yeh Hannah is that the squared night market you mentioned? it was such a suprise, just walking down a street market and about to go back when we saw a side road and then this whole square opened up! so hard not buying everything you see!
