So after our two night stay in Chiang Rai we caught the bus up to Chiang Khong which is the town on the boarder crossing into Loas. The bus was a little more rustic than the one we had before, but it was only 2 and a half hours and it goes through some stunning countryside so makes for a nice trip, and the fact that there were millions of pot holes near on the whole way meant we had to go slower and so less of a death ride and more of a tourist bus ride.
Yet again it rained and rained and poured! we arrived at the bottom of town with the intention of walking to the guest house which was a good 15 minuest walk but we all had to hide under a shop cover for about an hour hopeing the rain would die down...it didnt! so off we went in the pouring rain as the tuktuk drivers were going no where. we managed to find a nice lady who sold us some umbrellas and damo got a rather fetching poncho...camoflage too! ha. So we finally arrived at the guest house soaked through and freeeezing! Our very friendly lady boy showed us to our room and the first thing we noticed was the massive wet patch on the bed from the leaky roof, so room number two...looked lovely, clean, all is well, until i see a ghekko scamper up the wall and behing the wardrobe so bear grills over here goes investigating and sees another one hiding with his friend!!! needless to say we were straight back to our lady boy demanding another room. we got an upgrade and a ghekkoless room so we were happy in the end. It is really cold up here, we both wish we had packed more clothes and not just the one pair of trousers and one fleece we did bring.
Chiang Khong is just a small town, all on one main road with a number of little shops, cafes and guest houses. i can imagine in the sunshine its a really pretty place, wooden buildings and lots of trees, but in the grey rain nothing looks all that great...even thialand.
