19th October 2009:
Early drive to Kerala for our night on a Houseboat in the backwaters. At this point id been abit ill and was in desperate need of getting to somewhere clean and had a decent toilet. The bumpy roads and constant breaking was not helping my insides. Enough said.
But the change in landscape was instant. On our way into the Keralan Backwaters everything flattens out and there are lots of water ways, with houses along the whole stretch, divided by large canals. Our Houseboat when we finally got there, was very very luxurious. A little boat loaded us on with our luggage and transported us over. The Group was divided onto two Houseboats, myself and Dally G were with our Guide Abi and fellow tourer, Elyse. Thank God was all i could think as i rushed to the bathroom!
The rest of the evening was spent chilling out on the boat as it idled along the backwaters, weaving its way along as the sun started to set. We played a game of Karam, (fingers are still hurting), drank wine (not for me!) and tried to race the other boat. Lunch was served in the dining room, where there was a very big flat screen tv! hmm luxury indeedy.
As evening approached the driver moored up the boat, and both were tied together so that we could have Dinner with the whole group. Poorly me was only allowed rice, yoghurt and a couple of bananas, whilst everyone else gobbled down lots of lovely food! :(
We spent the last few hours chatting away, reading and watching the sun set, aswell as seeing lightening in the dark skies far off. But as the lights were put on the boat, the flies descended on us, and we were swarmed. The only creatures who benefitted from this were the many lizards that were crawling on the walls catching their dinner. Time for bed me thinks.
