Adelaide River – We went to the WW 11 War Cemetery were 240
victims from the Darwin bombing on 19th February 1942 have been laid
to rest. It was a very moving place to visit and sit and reflect. We both
commented on how the gardens were so immaculate, a full time curator is
employed to maintain these gardens.
We then drove onto Mt Bundy Station, south of Adelaide River.
Mt Bundy Station is a working brahman cattle and quarter horse property. The
original size of this cattle station was 1.1 million acres, it was one of the
first pastoral leases in the Top end of the Northern Territory. The bombing of
Darwin in 1942 by the Japanese saw a military change to the property as the
forces withdrew to Adelaide Rivers as the frontline of defence during WW11. The
American Navy developed a signaling site to warn of incoming submarines and the
Australians and Americans based their air force at Mt Bundy Station with
numerous hidden airfields repairing the damaged bombers. The property is now
family owned and they offer accommodation. We had happy hour around the fire
where they had a whip cracking expo.
