So hello hello again!
We are currently in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
In order to get here we were told to take a bus, but we met Bobbi!
Bobbi is a taxi driver who talks very Very good english. He told us all the prices everything costs and he gave us the lowdown. He was very helpful to us when he found out we were from Canada. About 15 years ago or so, the YMCA Christain group came to thailand to teach people english. Bobbi said he attended classes everyday.
When we had reached the bus depot, everything was in Thai. We paid Bobbi 20B to come translate and get us the good deal! We had planned on 350B/person for this 9 hour journey. Bobbi had said that we would be on a tiny seated 80 person bus with no meals and rare stops. So we watched him try and negotiate with this lady. She kept pointing at the fixed price of the tirp and told him she wouldn't change it. But he did find the best deal. For 558B/person we took a VIP bus with a meal and goody box with two lunch break stops. We got to watch some Thai karaoke shows, some games shows, and three movies. A Jet Li movie, the Fast and Furious, and The Last Legion. All were in Thai bt it was amazing to watch! We were the only English speaking couple so the steward would talk to the bus and then talk to Matt. He was very nice.
Side note: I do feel the pressures of being a woman in Thailand. Men do not speak to me or look at me. The Steward would talk to Matt and ask Matt if i wanted any food. It was ok, but I like being my own person sometimes! Matt is enjoying "owning" me so far. :P
So we made it to Chiang Mai. I tried calling this place, Eagle House, because it was in the travel book. I had no idea how to use the phone. I put in like Baht after Baht and it wouldn't let me dial. *cry* So this man came and helped me out! We ended us going with him to Eagle House. HE drove a Tuk Tuk. Freaking crazy vehicle. It is a 3 person car with no windows or doors. Just hold on for your life! And in Thailand, you can stick out your hand and touch the next vehicle. AGGGGGGH.
We safely made it to Eagle House. Amazingly cheap food and this place is run by an irish-thai family. English speaking is mandatory for th front desk staff.... YAY!
Today was picture taking, almost getting lost, travelling around our hostel day!
We took a wrong turn and ended up in residential Chiang Mai. Some guy graciously told us "Dead End" at one turn!
But obviously we found our way back!
We thought Eagle house was great. 240B for a room. But if you can see the pics, this place is very outdoorsy. Lots of bugs and nature. Now don't get me wrong. I like nature. But when you're in a malaria infested area, its just a little crazy!.
So on our big travels today we found a little place just near Eagle house. For 150B a night, you get a hotel room on the third floor. So we already booked Eagle for three more nights, but after that, the lady at this little place is waiting for us.
Our itenerary for Thailand is booked solid. We have one day activity and one day sight seeing/rest type of deal. By the end of it, we should have around 2000B leftover for Christmas shopping. Randomness, but Matt and I bought a 1.5 gallon jug of water for 33B...one dollar! :P
We are over budgeting and always finding 10-20B extra in coinage in our pockets.... More Christmas money!
Won't spoil our plans for tomorrow so you'll just have to wait and see.
P.s. Mom, the phone number is gibble for Thailand. I have to buy an international card just to dial the international saving number. SO i will do that in two days. It is 5:36pm on Wed.nov.28. So i will make the call on friday in the morning. We are like 14 hours ahead of you.So i will call you sometime in the middle of the night!
pp.s. Momma P. We are not dead! We just couldn't find a darn internet cafe. Its like a 20 min. walk from our hostel. :P
