Another early morning wake up for our flight to Lima. I hope that's the last time we have to do that. It's such a drag. Cusco airport didn't have much to offer for the two hours we had to wait there. The flight was quick though and we arrived in Lima at about 9:00. We took a taxi to the hostel. On the way there we passed by the Pacific Ocean. We're on the West Coast again! We stayed in the sister hostel of the place we were at in Cusco. It's also called Hitchhikers Backpackers Hostel, located in the Miraflores section of Lima. We actually had a great double room there and Sivanne stayed in the dorms. The place was big with lots of people from all over. There were inside and outside sitting areas with computers and TVs with English channels showing never ending episodes of Friends, The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. The dumbest shows but perfect for mindless half hours of watching when you feel like putting your feet up for a while. The hostel had a kitchen too so we could finally make our own tea.
We took a walk out into the surrounding neighborhood. It's more the upscale area of Lima so there are lots of restaurants and shops. Nothing too special though. The weather was grey, cloudy and a bit chilly. Apparently winter in Lima is always like this. 5 months of cloudy, damp weather every day that comes off the ocean. It was really depressing.
Even more depressing was the sudden change of plans that was about to happen. Omer and I had kind of decided that we no longer wanted to go on an 8 hour bus ride up to the mountains and Huaraz, mostly because we didn't want to be in 3000 + meter high altitudes anymore or the cold weather. The original plan had been to do the 4 day Santa Cruz trek but we didn't think we had the energy to go through with it anymore. Without this there wasn't really much point to going there. One of the options we were considering was to go south to Ica, Huacachina and Paracas where it was hot and sunny. Unfortunately Sivanne still really wanted to go to Huaraz. She had a friend from Canada to meet there that wanted to do the trek with her before she went back home. There was a lot of mixed feelings about separating but we knew it was inevitable in a week anyway so with lots of tears we put her on the bus to Huaraz and said goodbye. It was a tough point of the trip.
Feeling pretty sad and lonely all of the sudden, Omer and I decided to walk around the old city in Lima. Maybe it was just our mood but we didn't find anything special to see in this area either. In the end we sat in a coffee shop drinking coffee and deciding what to do. By the end of the morning we had bought bus tickets to Ica and booked a hotel in Huacachina.
Back to the hostel to get ready to depart this gloomy (in every way) city.
