This morning we took a bus to Pisac in the Sacred Valley to visit the market and the ruins there. The weather was still pretty cold and unstable but we took our chances (and our ponchos). Once in town you have to take a taxi up to the ruins because they are about 8 km away and high above the valley. The taxi costs 50 sols return. The views from the top were spectacular. These Incan ruins cover a large area of the mountainside overlooking the Sacred Valley and the town of Pisac. We trekked around the mountain, up and down stairs and through a tunnel to see all the sites. It was really windy and sometimes rainy but for the most part the weather wasn't too bad. It took about two hours to see most of the place and we were kind of disappointed when we found a nice, clearly marked trail that led downhill through a beautiful valley back to the town. It's hard to say how far it was but probably not more than 3-4 km all downhill. Unfortunately we had a taxi waiting for us so we couldn't do this. Wish we had known. I really recommend visiting here. It was a beautiful place.
Back in town we had lunch at Ulrike's Restaurant since it had been recommended in our book. The place was really cute and funky and the food was great. We had quinoa soup and sandwiches that were delicious. They also had a great looking carrot cake and Kahlua cheesecake but we were full so didn't try them :(
Back in Cusco we started to get ready for the trip to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu the next day. We are taking a bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo and from there to Aguas Calientes by the train. We found out that you can only take a small bag on the train so we had to plan for three nights with a small backpack and leave the big bags at the hotel.
The excitement is definitely building to finally see Machu Picchu. Will it meet our expectations?
