Greetings from Italy, another glorious sunny day and I am off to the coastal area of Civitavecchia today. I am driving into the Port from Bracciano and meeting with my friend Luca.
As I left the motorway I was immediately confronted by an endless blue ocean, a stunning start to the day, the air was also filled with the familiar smell of the coast (but not overpowed by fish, more fresh), which was very welcome as the heat by ten o'clock was sitting at about 28/29 degrees.
Once I met up with Luca, we used his moped as it could get through the streets easier (and to be fair, was probably a lot cooler), and after a typical Italian Breakfast (Croissant and Espresso) we began the day with a very informed guided tour of the town and it's landmarks.
We visited the old port, this has been there since the 2nd Century, and was constructed by the Emperor Trajan. Despite being, some would say, antiquated, it is still very much in use today, and is a major Cruise and Ferry Port.
We also saw Forte Michelangelo or "Michelangelo's Fort". This was completed in the 16th Century in 1535. Again this building affords a lot of history and is definately worth a visit.
Finally after a few more stops we arrived at the beach (in Italy there are usually areas on the beach for public use, and also some for private use. The private parts just require a little fee, are usally tended to by staff providing you with loungers, umberellas etc. There is usually a restaurant or bar attached too), we were in a private section and didn't waste time getting into swim shorts, the temperature now had risen over 30 and the sea was a welcome refreshment.
After a short while, we were met by Luca's wife and daughter and had a relaxing afternoon by the sea. We had lunch in the restaurant overlooking the section of beach we were on, Pasta and fresh seafood, delicious. Finishing the visit off with a friendly game of volley ball.
I have to say that my first impressions of Civitavecchia are all good, there is a good balance of both old and new sights, and the coast in this area is fantastic. I will be going back more often as it is only a forty minute drive, and it would be a shame not to enjoy such a beautiful place.
