First day in Florida for my spring trip, cruising down A1A. Sunny day, enjoying the soft breeze coming from the ocean. I had forgotten that the Daytona 500 race was this weekend, so I'm in search of a hotel. Finally found a nice room at the Topaz in Flagler. The cost is $125 USD per night, but worth it to be right on the beach. The hotel is a bit dated but staff is very friendly and helpful. The room is very large and clean. My room of choice consists of two (very tall) full-size beds, a large dining area, and a sofa in front of an ocean view window. The entertainment center, however, housed a dated VCR with a sign stating that VHS rentals were available at the office. The bathroom was also rather large, and very clean.
They also have a higher end restaurant on site, called Blue at the Topaz. The menu is very limited, however, and rated $$$$. I sampled a bit of their fare. I started with fresh bread served with real butter (delicious), followed by a house salad topped with Creamy Chipotle Ranch dressing (dressing was a bit bland, not as flavorful as I had anticipated). My main course of choice was a NY Strip served with Scallion Whipped Potatoes and Crispy Steamed Vegetables (all delicious). I followed up my meal with a dessert of 7 Layer Chocolate Cake garnished with fresh strawberries and a Cream Cheese Drizzle (rich and scrumptious).
