Parentins is a town of about 100,000 with no road access. It is known for the Boi Bumba festival at the end of June. The festival is a smaller version of Carnival. It depicts a struggle between a mythological blue ox (Caprichoso) and a red ox (Garantido). All the people and businesses in the town are divided between the blue and the red. The parade features flamboyant dances, costumes, floats, singing, dancing and drumming. A 35,000 seat stadium has been built for the festival. It, and the nearby Cathedral are the two biggest buildings in town. We took a pedicab tour. At the end of the hour-long tour, I handed a $10 bill to the driver. He indicated no and we thought he was asking for more. In fact, he was trying to tell me it was only $5.00. He finally realized I really wanted to give him $10, which he took with a big smile. A very neat and clean town which appears quite well maintained.
