Made it across the border and back into thailand yesterday. Its incredible the difference - proper roads, people, traffic - it really is stepping back in time going to Laos.
Only spent one night in Chaing Mai, its mainly a hill-trekking place and I seem to have done loads of that - got a flight down to bangkok this morning. Its nice to be in the city again if only for the food (Thai food is definitely my favourite), the convenience/availabilty of everything (including changing money!!) and of course to get my laundry done. Going to hang around tomorrow and then Friday I'm booked on a small tour to Kanchanaburi for a few days to see the bridge over the river kwai (the actual bridge not the film of course). There's also some trekking (what again??) and an elephant ride, hooray....
Some more recent highlights -
1 the bus from Loung Namtha to the border with thailand - 9 hours on a bus last used in the second world war, none of the windows closed meaning that a huge sandstorm attacked you for nearly the whole journey - I'm still washing out the sand. There was road for about the first 100 metres. Also the engine was smokng constantly - the poor guys collecting tickets had to keep filling it with water to cool down - it also meant that we stopped about 200 times! Only in Laos....
2 Dogs in SE Asia - never before have I seen such an unattractive bunch of 'hounds' (there is no other way to describe them) in my life - seriously I saw a labrador type thing with the head of a yorkshire terrier the other day - i also saw something that was half chicken/half duck, very strange indeed
3 I was at the bank 20 minutes before it opened on monday morning at half eight - two germans still there before me - what is the secret? Is there something I've missed?
4 A sign on a guesthouse advertising a 'cool shower.' Its hardly going to attract people..what about 'room with door' or 'bed in corner,' that should work.............
