Happy New Year!
I guess its been a while between blogs...no, we have not been kidnapped....just on the set of LOST.
Antigua was fantastic. We spent a few days walking around town and taking in the beautiful colonial building. Got pampered and David even went to physio for his arm.
We also took stroll up an active volcano - Pacaya - actually we didn't walk up we chose the horse option instead. David's poor horse was panting so hard, whereas mine just farted constantly...it was so funny. The view from the top was amazing. The volcano was really active with lava pouring down the sides. We got to walk on the freshly made lava fields and you could feel the heat under you feet, I am surprised my trainers did not melt. In fact we walked up to about 50 meters away from the falling hot, glowing lava rock. From the top we watched a specatacular sunset and the skyline was full of active volcanos all around us.
Our next stop was Punta Gorda in Belize. We were welcomed to Belize by Reggae Nick and a very catchy Belizean song that goes:
Olay olay oh-oh-oh; White man pays di bills; Spanish man builds di house; Chinaman cooks di food and Black Man lay di pipe; Olay olay oh-oh-oh
Its a great song and I've been singing it all through Belize
In Punta Gorda we spoilt ourselves by staying in a very comfortable resort ...it was Christmas after all. The cabin's were huge with screens all around so you were getting the jungle experience from the luxury of a 5 star cabin. All night we could hear the roars of the howler monkeys. Did some great trips from here like visiting an organic cocoa farm and making chocolate, and swimming in the local caves. We got the special treat of interacting with locals here who cooked us lunch and invited us into their homes. In return we taugh the kids French...they were very sweet.
The next bus trip seemed to the hardest of them all. I think we had 140 people in a 50 seater school bus and the 6 hour ride to San Ignacio took forever. Not really impressed with this town. I am not sure why travellers recommend it. We did see some pretty nice Mayan ruins at Xunantunich that were not crawling with tourists but we were quite happy to leave earlier than planned.
The weird guy, Steve, who ran the hostel noticed we were quite bored and suggested we go to Tabacoo Caye which was the best tip we received all holiday. Tabacco is a tiny island in the Carribean with about 50 cocout trees and where the highest cause of death is getting hit by a falling coconut. The snorkelling is beautiful here right off the beach and short boat ride away. Melissa took us out on a whole day trip where we swam with rays and saw great fish and coral. Then she gave me a manicure and pedicure, and convinced here cousin to take us to our New Year destination on a sail boat for free.
The boat was doing a 3 day snorkelling and island hopping trip which punters pay $500 for so we were very grateful for the free food, rum and ride. Drinking Panty Rippers under the starry skies my world is still rocking up and down.
24 hours of cruising both day and night we arrived at our last stop - Caye Caulker. Another chilled out, cruisy, Carribean, Rasta island. Might go diving, rent a golf cart, sneak into a hotel pool or just sit in a hammock for the rest of the day. New Years eve for us was sitting around a camp fire cracking up at some crazy rasta DJ sing badly and tell jokes.
Hope you all had a good one
Love
Crena and David
