The placement of doom….
I arrive, in the middle of nowhere to a centre fro adults with disabilities, I meet other volunteers and one who I will live with for some of my time in Nepal. On first impression, the placement is ok… and things do not tend to improve for the remainder of my time there. The terms abuse and harm do not seem to be in Nepalese culture and trying to explain to the staff, and volunteers, that this Is not acceptable, is like banging your head on a wall…. So this is what I did! Not only was there physical and mental abuse within the centre, it was evident that the staff believe tying a 17 year old lad with cerebral palsy, autism and severely malnourished is acceptable.
The things I did achieve whilst there were eating, bacterial food infection, completing a world map to show where volunteer come from, sensory work for the residents in forms of pictures completed in different fabrics and a 'how to' guide.
I couldnt wait to get out of here!!! I know it sounds so negative, but I just wanted to jump on a plane and get back to England where I didnt have to deal with these things....
But WAIT... a centre for chidlren with HIV and AIDS....? YES PLEASE!!!
