So 6am is seen for the first time in a long time!!! ANd this is just in preperation for our 7hour walk up the volcano!
After 1km, we are told that is gets 10 times worse, though i watch the guide and porters climb this thing in flip flops and carrying copious amounts of equipment! SO the 7.5km climb begins... and im already ready to quit. I feel like i am about to die and want to give up. But i grit my teeth and continue on with water in hand and sweat dripping down my face....
It was only at around 1.5km that we realise that we were warned NOT TO CLIMB THE VOLCANO!!! so why were we walking up this gradual incline exactly? I had no bloody idea at this stage of my life! perhaps i hit mid life crisis!
SO by the time we hit position 2, it was around 10am and we were told it was time for lunch.... at 10? but by the time it had been cooked on a little fire, it was soon 12noon and we were all ready for some food!
Before we get to leave, the heavens open and we decide that walking in the rain would not be much fun! so we hang fire!
I love that the guide tells us how long it takes to get to the next rest point, though in Indonesian time!! 45mins, really means about double that!
I cant actually think of anything that makes me want to put one foot in front of the other right now! The last couple of hours really were hell! The incline was steep and rocky. The guide agai9n informs me that it is only 5 mins to the top, i guess this is if you can fly! It took me about another half an hour to reach the view point where you could see the volcano.
The view was totally beautiful and well worth that 7hour trek! It was then time to see and set up our camp for the night. It was a little uncertain as to where we were actually going to put our tents as there was such little space but apparently we managed to cram 3 of them in! ANd by the time we knew it, dinner was served by candle light and a romantic meal for 2 was eaten in the tent and cold. And at only 7pm, we were all tucked up in bed, in the cold, and b***** me, i am the only one with a broken sleeping bag. It is time for cuddles for Vic to keep me warm! hehe I literally have to hold my sleeping bag together the whole night and VIc thinks I am jokin, no no, i actually freeze my bum off!!!
It is now time to make the decent back to civilisation! We had our porter who again carried all our rubbish to the bottom for us. when we asked how long this should take, it was normally around 5hours. However, for some unknown reason, it took us 7hours to get down the flipping mountain too! The Porter continued to laugh at us for taking so long but me and VIc carried on taking our time!!
Finally at the bottom, the porter cooked us lunch at his mother in laws house. a little surreal though great experience! A short yet very painful walk back to the accomodation and we get picked up to be taken to Sengigi for a much needed rest!!
