New years eve in Ho Chi Minh.
It's been a few days since I last updated but there is so much to report that it wouldn't do justice to just one post.
We experienced New Year's Eve in Ho Chi Minh City. Being from Sydney we were just about due for a dose of the crowds, the noise and the fireworks we normally experience on NYE. At home we put up with the noise and the crowds so we can experience the annual fireworks spectacular. NYE in HCMC is a little different.
Firstly, Celebrating the new year on the 1st of January is regarded a western thing. In Vietnam they celebrate their own new year later in January. That doesn't mean that thy don't enjoy celebrating it. It seems that they celebrate anything here.
Although the crowds come out in force, they are all quite well behaved. With hundreds of thousands of motorbikes out and about there doesn't seem to be any trouble or drunken behavior, just crowds of people and many of them still sitting on their motorbikes waiting for the fireworks.
So we picked our spot to watch the fireworks. We weren't sure exactly where that would be but there were thousands of locals stationed in the open area next to the markets gazing up in the sky waiting for midnight. Midnight came and the fireworks started - somewhere. We could hear them, we could see smoke in the distance, but the fireworks were somewhere else!
After midnight all the locals got onto their bikes and rode home. That was NYE in HCMC.
