Today we learned how to cross the road in Vietnam. The secret to crossing is to walk confidently across the road and amazingly all the traffic will avoid you! We walked to Marge and Dave's hotel a few blocks away, perfecting our road crossing technique along the way.
After a few wrong turns and some friendly advice from the locals we found our way to Ben Thanh Markets.
Ho chi Minh day 2
It's amazing how you can fit so much market into a small space. Every square meter is taken up by someone selling something. Great place to go if you want a fake designer watch, a t shirt or junk jewelry. You only need to take three steps into one of the narrow aisles before you hear the familiar "shirt for you sir?" or "handbag maam?" or "cheap price for you".
The markets are also a great place to stop to have a look at interesting food. The kids couldn't stand the smell of the food area for too long but while we were there we saw lots of interesting things like scorpions in glass jars and a whole lot of things we could not recognise.
We can't get enough of the Vietnamese food. So far it has been good in quantity and quality. After lunch we found an ice cream parlour and indulged in some sweet treats - marked that one on the map for another visit during our stay in HCMC.
In the afternoon we went to the War Remnants Museum. A bit confronting but it served the purpose of letting people know how wrong the Vietnam War was and how it affected the Vietnamese people for years afterwards.
It's amazing what you can see being carried on a scooter. So far we have seen a whole family of four on a bike, five water cooler bottles strapped to a bike, and rooster guarding a bike on the footpath. We guessed that it was a good security measure that would probably find it's way to the dinner table afterwards.
