EUROPE TRAVELS
Just went to see a live Flamenco performance last night. It was just brilliant! Em and I went with 2 other american girls we met at the hostel.
With our limitted Spanish skills it was difficult enough trying to determine whether there was a Flamenco performance on at all or whether it was already booked out. Finally, after lots of hand gestures and writing we worked out we could make a reservation!
We were reassured by the guy doing the technical/lighting work that we were about to see the best Flamenco performance in Madrid. He also moved us from table, to table about 3 times to make sure we had the best view and offered to take photos for us during the performance (eventhough we weren't supposed to). This again was all said in Spanish and between the 4 of us we tried to read between the signs. We decided to ask the guy if we could take his photo, as he was an "interesting" looking middle-aged guy, and to capture the moment. He was rather taken aback and flattered by our request (big mistake!) and through the waiters at the restaurant he asked to take us out for drinks after. We politely declined and legged it up the road.
Anyway, the actual Flamenco performance was incredible. Amazing use of their voices, clapping, percussion instruments, piano and of course guitar. The dancing was something else too. I'd have to say it was just about the highlight of my trip to Spain.
Well, our last day in Madrid. Hoping to meet up with some Kiwi girls today, then it's a very early morning to catch our flight to Barcelona!!!!
