Thursday morning, and we set off again. We needed to get to Seattle that night, which was a 12hour drive, and we needed to get there so we could have a few hours to catch up with Julie and Jason, Jonathan's other brother, in the morning. We managed to get organised, eat breakfast, and drop the portacot back to Jeremy and leave by 9am :-) and set off.
We couldn't miss the opportunity to cross the Golden Gate bridge, so we added a bit to our trip to cross it. It was very impressive. We didn't stop and get out, just went across and enjoyed the view. There are other bridges across the bay too, from what I can gather, more significant in terms of access and daily use, but this one is red :) It is very high, high off the water and them the steel very high, but not as long as some of the others. Unfortunately, the Golden Gate bridge was not on our route, and we needed to get back to our route. The other unfortunate part was that we had no map and no data, so no electronic maps either. The only thing was the actual GPS positioning on the map of the iPad. It was always super-slow to load because we had no data, so we had to guestimate our way onto highways and across! Nevermind, by 11:30am we were finally heading out the other side of San Francisco.
It was a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong day. We stopped more times than we wanted, but we saw some good sights along the way including snow... The temperature dropped, and we spent a lot of the afternoons in the mountain areas with the temperature reading below 0 degrees! Or below 32 F as the car read... We were out of California and into Oregon, and made it a way through before stopping for dinner...at Tacobell. Oh, Silas always spots Tacobell, and has the cutest way of pronouncing it. I have recorded it on my phone, it was too good to miss.
Once the kids were asleep for the evening we made much faster progress...and arrived in Seattle around 1:45am. It was frrrrrrrreeeeezing. We were so glad to get to bed!
We went to see Jason after breakfast, saw his apartment, and then went to the "mall" for a wander and lunch. At Jason's apartment we took the lift. Silas got in, looked at the buttons, and said "Look! Tacobell!" - it was a bell! We were quick to tell him he wouldn't get Tacobell if he pressed it, Jason said maybe just the fire brigade...
We raced off after lunch, we didn't have too far to go to the border and then the ferry to the island, but we had wanted to (ideally) catch the 5pm ferry. The border can take about an hour though, and we adjusted our plans to the 6pm ferry which was more likely. We were fortunate at the border, considering it was Friday evening, and it only took about 15-20mins. Before we knew it we were in the queue for the ferry! We take our car on the ferry, park it, and then we can go inside. They have about 3 car levels, and a few passenger levels including a restaurant.
We got inside and headed upstairs to get the kids something to eat (it was mealtime again!). When we were heading in, I spotted Kayla Higgs at the cashier. Mark and Kayla and their 3 boys were on our ferry, which was really, really great! Instead of having to chase our kids around on our own, we sat with them. First we all ate a bit, and Shane (who is 4 on Monday) and Silas hit it off. Then we headed up to the play area. All the kids ran around (they had a huge drive that day too) with delight and kept each other busy. We got to sit and chat and catch up :) It was probably the best thing that could have happened and it made the ferry trip fly!
We arrived in Victoria about 8:45-9pm, and were at the Higgs' place and settling in by about 9:30. Ooh it was so good to have that behind us!
Hoping everyone is well. If you want to leave me a message you can write a comment, I'd love to hear from you all! And by the way, don't feel like you have to read all my ramblings!
Love to all and God bless.
Bye for now.
