I have been very slack on the blog-front so Im updating the Orlando leg of our tour.
Due to our amazing location on I-drive, everything we needed was within walking distance, so it was a perfect way to exercise, save money and see the sights! I-HOP really did become our haven and by the end of our stay in Orlando we knew the staff by name and even took a few pics - not very attractive ones at that.
After the first day of Orlando, we randomly slept in till 5pm and from that day on our night became day and day became night! Olly and I are both nocturnal types anyway but this was crazy. Needless to say we had to a pull a 30+ hour awake stint to get our sleeping pattern on track. Despite being hellish to stay awake in the Florida humidity, we found a way to amuse ourselves at the local 'Fun Spot'. We got an all day band which allowed us to go-kart on the 4 mad tracks all day long! There was also free soda, arcades and rides. It was a fun day, but sadly in our sleepy state we neglected to wear suncream and ended up a nice shade of pink for the next few days!
On the Monday and Tuesday we headed to Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios. We headed straight to IOA, and loved it. First we rode the HULK which is a huge coaster and an amazing experience - painful on the neck and shoulders tho - you just shoot off out of nowhere! Also loved Duelling Dragons, probably my fave - very smooth and glidey and awesome how the two coasters twist and cross eachother. We also rode Dr. Doom, Jurrasic Park, Pop-eye River Rapids and Dr. Seuss baby carousel...The weather while we were there was scorching, so needless to say we became very sweaty - Hallelujah for water rides, I'm telling ya! Next we headed to Universal Studios and I faced my fear head on (literally) on the Jaws ride! The Mummy was an unexpectedly awesome ride, a coaster in the dark with fire and scarab beetles covering the walls. The Simpsons ride was also a great experience, although the queueing was insane!
The weather varied massively in Orlando and we experienced a few severe thunderstorms. On one particular occasion we were strolling down I-drive when I spotted a local man who rides around on his push-bike covered in parrots (real, live, 'polly wanna cracker?' type parrots!) So i asked him if i could take a photo of them on the bike, next thing I knew we were covered head to toe in these parrots and being charged $10 for a polaroid! Good times. So after our random parrot experience we carried on strolling and suddenly the sky turned black and the heavens opened, and I mean serious rain, thunder and lightning - we looked back at the road and the streets were deserted...Day after Tomorrow Stylee. We ran, soaked to the skin into the nearest gift store and had to wait it out there until the storm passed...good times!
As for the rest of the trip, it was very chillaxed, lots of walking, browsing and enjoying the sunshine. Another haven of ours was Books-a-Million (rename Books-a-Grillion by us) in which we sat and read magazine and books, then enjoyed a latte or two at Joe Muggs!
