Rob and Jen bumming round the world for a bit
Well, for a start, we're not in Papa New Guinea.
The website seems to want to limit our trip to islands i've never heard of and Papa New Guinea. So, flying in the face of that and forever the rebelious types, we've come to Bali (The sheep picture is temporary too, if we've replaced it, ignore this).
Bali's a nice place. Actually, when i say nice, i mean the Hotel is nice and the weather is nice. Other things are not so nice. The streets are lined with locals trying to puruade you to try out their 'Billabong' or 'Roxy' (the incorrect grammar is on purpose) and full of taxi's encouraging you to take a ride by beeping at you as they drive past and beckoning you into the back seat. I'm not sure what they hope to achieve, i doubt this tactic works. Whilst Jen and I have been wondering down the streets not once, when one of these taxi drivers has beckoned me to come inside have i said, 'you know what jen, let's take a ride, might be fun''. Anyway, you get the picture. The endless hounding of street vendors seemed to get worse over the first couple of days until i ended up getting a manicure. Now i don't care.
Having learnt how to deal with the locals in a way that doesn't end up with giving up a slice of my masculinity, things are looking up! Not that things were ever bad, our hotel falls into the 'authentic' category, has a lovely pool, our room is nice with an English movie channel (The movies are in english though not necessarily made in England, you understand), which used to be augmented by a channel showing primarily American shows, The Simpsons et al. but this seems to have ceased broadcasting due to the Hotel not paying it's bill, or at least that's what i think, as my Indonesian is about as good as my Mandarin, which is a bit shaky at the best of times. There's also a decent restaurant and bar, so we don't even need to leave the Hotel. But, alas, that is not why we are here and have booked an Island tour on Thursday to prove it, so watch out for that.
In other news, Big Steve (who i'm sure you all know either personally or by reputation), is flying out to thailand a day or two after Jen and I, and will be joining us for a bit of Thai banter, should be wicked.
