We arrived in Fiji on the mainland late afternoon. We were greated by a Fijian band as we got off the plane. We spent our first night on the mainland Nadi as we couldn't get out to the Islands until the following day. We stayed at smugglers cove which was nice. They had a Fijian dance group perfoming that night so we stayed to watch them, but had to get an early night as we had to catch the boat at 7.15am the next morning. So the next morning we were taken to the boat and set off to our Island of choice Tavewa. Tavewa in in the Yasawa group, the most northern set of Islands so the boat trip took over 4hours. Was nice to cruise by all the other Islands and soak up some much needed sun! We finally arrived at the Island at we were water taxied to our resort, Otto and Fannys. The Island was tiny, only 3km round and 1km across. It only had 50 permanent residents, and even when all the accomadation is full there is still only around 250 people! The Island itself is quite rustic, with rocky beaches and rainforrest. Our accomdation was great, we stayed in a Bure, the electricity stayed on until 11pm and there was no hotwater. The drinking water was rainwater the locals collected. We had our meals in a small dining room with the other guests. There were no shops or any other means to get things for yourself but luckily the food was great. They also served afternoon tea which consisted of tea and chocolate cake - which became a daily tradition. Most days were spent lazing in hammocks, swimming in the sea and sunbathing on the small beach. One day we took the short hike to the top of the Island, we got great views of the other Islands, very pretty. Most nights were spent chatting to other guests, one of which was very much like Dawn - no bar or pub to go to! And the staff shut down at 9pm. So most nights we were in bed by 10pm! One night the staff invited us to join them and the other locals for their Kava night. Kava is a tradtional Fijian narcotic drink made from the root of the Kava plant. The locals explained how it is important to them and showed us how to make it. We both tried some. It looks a bit like dirty dishwater but doesn't have much taste - it made our tonges numb!! We stayed with the locals as they sang as danced and drank more Kava. They then sang the tradional farewell song and we went to bed. Was great to spend time with the locals and see their way of life. They were all very genorous and all work together. We had a great time at Otto and Fannys, we spent six days there in total then it was time to move to the next Island.
