Hey,
Sorry it has been a while - we have been very busy! We took a 2 day slow boat from Thailand - Luang Prabang in Laos which was interesting to say the least - a long hot journey but we met some cool people an ended up travelling the whole of Laos with them. Luang Prabang was amazing a very pretty town and we enjoyed it alot - wish we could have spent longer. From there we headed to Phonsavan where we did a trip to the 'Plain of Jars' - a lil like the British version of Stone Henge. On that trip we visted a crater site with unexploded UXO's which was awful, it put a different perspective on the war which started with the Americans, which was very secret yet still caused alot of distruction. They dropped more bombs on Laos than Germany and Japan combined during WW2- shocking. We walked passed a unexploded Bombie which was difficult to digest, in that the bombs are still around and causing just as much terror as years ago. We then visited a village where they use all the shells that were lying around for foundations of houses, as animal troffs and general purposfull uses to their lives - we were then invited into a local house and given lao lao (rice whisky) and crushed corn and our guide translated, a sureal experience, we loved it!!! We then headed to Tham Piu cave where 400 locals stayed for 6 years to hide from the war and they were all eventually killed by a US Bomb Raid.
We then headed to Vang Vieng where we went Tubing (lots of alcohol and tubes and a fast river!) We were pretty well behaved as someone had died 7 days previous but that is the laos laws over here! A brilliant time though!
So we are now in Vientiane and are leaving tonight for Bangkok where we are doing the bridge over River Kwai trip and then down to the islands.
We have both agreed that laos is the most picturesque country so far - although very widny bus journeys (locals spitting and very hot - they can be interesting you never know what will happen!)
So we will speak again soon - a lil rest is in need so bring on the islands before the full moon!!
Love to all xxxxxxxxx
