Whoever told me that the island of Hvar was the Croatian party island was not lying. I wish i came here last time i was in Croatia 9 years ago as a far more durable sort of a partygoer. What struck me most was not so much the ability to party to 6am every night of the visitors, some of whom do it repeatedly for 5 to 10 nights in a row but of a certain group that reside there for the summer months. They are the group of 6 or so Aussies, Brits etc that are housed together and paid to organise nightly pub crawls. As far as i can gather they are housed by and employed by certain bar and night club owners on the island. Each affiliates his/her self with a hostel and uses the hours between about 6pm and 9pm to convince/coerce would be partyers into joining the nights activities. They're good for between 10 and 20 from each of the hostels as far as i can make out plus anyone else they managed to entice throughout the day. About 9.30 each night this large group then goes to two or three indoor/outdoor bars before heading to a nightclub at 2am. One of which involves a boat ride to an island dedicated to the night club known as 'Carp Diem'. What an incredible idea. I think i stayed the duration or at least close to it one night; Clare 2. Large numbers of guest from the hostel were sick or getting sick. The part that still amazes me the most is the stamina of the 6 or so people who make this their occupation of choice from May to end of September. I think i'm impressed and horrified in equal measures. Like i say, i wish i could have had a crack at this 9 years ago aged 23 when i was a better chance of keeping up.
Perhaps the benefit of our, shall we say, maturity is that it meant we did get to see some of what the island had to offer. The highlight easily being hiring scooters with a bunch of others and checking out a large part of the island for a day. We also checked out the old town and thousand year old fort. I'm sure this will get old at some point but being early in the piece i'm still enjoying it.
The other noteable highlight for us was taking shelter from the most immense storm we've seen in ages. It was priceless watching certain people jump in fright from their seats as lighting nearly broke on our heads, thunder cracked all around us and Clare, myself and a group of locals all huddled for shelter at an outdoor bar. Whoever that Murphy's law bloke is he has a lot to answer for. Sure we could have organised accomodation before we arrived on the island but things don't always pan out as they should. Well he got us. Trudging around with all your gear whilst getting nailed from above makes for a funny memory but not necessarly the best experience at the time. To her credit Clare bares no obvious scars. We'll find out if any actually exist the next time this happens,.
