Lesson number 1. One great aiport Hello can make up for all the other awkward and painful airport farewells.
Lesson number 2. Seems like you need to create a new blog entry just to stick a pin on the map
When i asked Clare for her comments on Dubrovnik all she had to say was BEAUTIFUL. True story. When i get to put some photos on here hopefully the pictures will tell the story. I won't bore you all with what we did day by day but one of the highlights is an amazing bar built into the outside of the fortress wall where you can go for a beer, have a swim and watch the sun go down over the adriatic. That accounted for two or three afternoons. There's also no shortage of great restaurants, cafes and bars to check out if you're into that sort of thing. Who isn't these days...
On a side note i was sitting on the plane beside a political journalist on his way to Dubrovnik for the day because the presidents of Croatia, Kosovo, Serbia, Bosnia and one or two of the other neighbouring countries were in town for a meeting. I asked him about a geographical peculiarity that has intrigued me for some time. Bosnia and Herzegovina protrudes into Croatia in a way that almost completely disects Croatia in two. The reason as explained to me is that apparently going back 900 or so years Dubrovnik was one of the major capitals in the region. They were a strong sea faring nation that could trade and defend by sea as well as anyone. They were not so proficient by land. The Venetians on the other hand were; by both land and sea. Fearing an attack by land the leaders of Dubrovnik sold a large swathe of land to the Turks knowing that the Venetians would not consider crossing their territory. Consequently the people of Dubrovnik achieved their security. I'm now left curious how the occupation of that region by the Turks all those centuries ago has influenced the cultural and religious heritage of the people of Bosnia.
