Yes today I spent 2 hours in Prison. After speaking to one of the barmen in the hostel about things to do in Bolivia last night I was determined to arrange a trip to experience for myself the San Pedro Prison. Within an hour or so of talking I had talked a few people into going the next day (in particular some guys for security). So today at about 1 we headed to the prison to see if we could get a tour from a prisoner. About 5 years ago they use to offer legitimate tours, however due to detection that tourists were just going to the prison for drugs these were stopped. Nowadays the only way to see around the prison is to prearrange with a prisoner via phone or to turn up and chance your luck. We had a number of a guy but decided to just turn up at the prison and speak to some people. So along with some 4 other backpackers, we headed to the entrance. It didn´t really look like a prison from the outside, hence why Charlotte and I sat right in the Plaza opposite the day before and didn´t notice it. Anyway after a phone call and some price negotiation a guy named Kenny arrived and gave us the low down. We were then taken into a small room just to the left of the entrance and signed in and gave them our money. We signed in again at the gate were the only guards of the prison sat. Then we entered the prison.
We were introduced to our tour guide/prisoner Miguel and the 3 or 4 bodyguards (also prisioners) who would ensure that noone hassled us for money.
TBC - sorry very tired, it has been a long day
